Zel “Kamiooka” Network Upgrade — Summary (+ a little fun drama)
ZelNode operators and full node users need to update again — Please read summary of events below
Kamiooka Activation
The Zel Network Upgrade (“Kamiooka”), which included a POW algorithm swap to ZelHash (Equihash 125,4) was activated at block height 372,500, around 3AM UTC July 4th. After the activation, the chain stopped and no blocks were found for about 5 hours. This was caused by a bug in the difficulty retargeting algorithm that did not present in testnet.
The bug was relatively minor, and a large portion of the community, including miners, pool operators, and general Discord community, all joined in on voice chat to watch first-hand as the community all worked together to solve an issue (it was really fun to experience in case you missed it last night).
Within a few hours, and with the help of at least 4 dozen community members, an updated release was pushed and the chain was moving again. We want to say thank you to everyone who joined in on the experience, we hope you had as much fun as we did.
A second update for ZelNodes & Full Node wallets
Because of the issue from last night, ZelNode operators and those using full node wallets should update again to the latest release. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but would like to remind that considering the scope of this large network upgrade and that a fix was built and released in under 5 hours, this is ultimately a massive success. There can always be unforeseen issues with newly-developed code, but that means we are moving forward by continually building out the Zel ecosystem.

ZelNode Operators
Most operators used the official install script, updating your ZelNode is the same process as last time (remember, don’t include the $ sign).
Update ZelNode to protocolversion 170013:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo systemctl stop zelcash
$ sudo apt-get upgrade -y
$ sudo reboot -n
If you used a different script or installed from source, then use your preferred method to update your ZelNode.
