Flux: Proof Of Useful Work Utility in AI
One of the recent exciting highlights of the Tech industry is the increasing acceleration and adoption of artificial intelligence. AI is here to stay……but so is Flux’s Proof of Useful Work.
What is PoUW?
Proof Of Useful Work (PoUW) is a consensus protocol designed to improve the efficiency of blockchain and mining processes by allocating resources that would otherwise be wasted to solving practical problems in the modern world.
Proof of Work (POW) consensus is the most popular consensus in the blockchain industry due to its robust security and verification system. However, it is inherently wasteful.
Every year, over 200 TWh worth of electricity is consumed by miners all over the world. Regrettably, in addition to the rising financial implications and environmental concerns, all this power only goes into solving the hash and nothing more.
Flux’s approach to Proof of Useful Work addresses this limitation. It also leverages the relative abundance of graphics cards and under-utilized hardware infrastructure to create a decentralized peer-to-peer system capable of providing real utility to tackle the current challenges of the AI industry.
The Cost Question
One significant factor that continues to be a severe limiting factor to the optimal exploitation of AI capabilities is the cost of training Machine Learning models.
Chat-GPT 3 training, for example, incurred over $ 4 million in costs.
The lack or limited access to the vast amount of critical infrastructure needed to train these models creates an unfair disparity that favors and may tilt the swing of AI innovation only toward big business. The Flux PoUW approach changes this rationale by offering access to an extensive, decentralized infrastructure that can meet client’s requirements.
Flux PoUW will allow clients needing AI infrastructure to rent specific hardware that corresponds to their current requirements, with options to scale out as needed.
Using Flux PoUW, running concurrent simulations and model training with the system auto-allocating resources to other projects as soon as one workload is completed will be possible.
This approach will reduce the time training ML models traditionally require and enable rapid deployment of AI solutions.
Decentralized AI Future
Flux PoUW will also address the imminent threat of centralization and loss of privacy to Artificial Intelligence.
Most of the infrastructure capable of powering AI demands is owned by a few large corporations. At the core of Artificial intelligence is the need for quality data. Sadly, large amounts of this data are already ‘owned’ and controlled by these centralized entities.
AI innovators who rely on centralized infrastructure to build novel solutions may also inadvertently surrender their data to be milked by big business in corporate espionage.
Speculations are already rife about privacy and the biased tendencies of artificial intelligence. Therefore, leaving the future of AI data to centralized infrastructure may ultimately create a monopolization of technology, which could be dangerous—especially considering that the regulations around the ethical use of AI are, at the moment, only rudimentary.
Flux PoUW provides a healthy counterbalance to this narrative. Flux already maintains a privacy policy on its PoUW model that ensures customers’ data are strictly confidential and prohibited from sale or distribution to third parties. Flux also provides CPU hardware-level isolation and memory encryption, among other measures.
This aims to ensure a secure environment that restricts hosts’ access in the decentralized network to areas of shared resources that may contain sensitive data.
AI-Assisted Medical Research
Artificial intelligence was critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping clinicians and technologists diagnose patients effectively using CT scans and radiographs. Remarkably, during this period, Flux started to donate computing power to medical research projects like Folding@home.
Using the Flux PoUW model, more medical research projects can access the digital infrastructure they need to leverage AI solutions. This will enable them to tackle more complicated healthcare problems and drive innovation into new therapeutic measures.
Environmental Impact
Data centers account for 0.3% of all CO emissions into the environment. With the large amounts of computing power AI projects require, attempting to scale AI innovation through conventional means will eventually negatively impact the environment. Flux’s model will pool resources, reduce overhead costs, and reduce carbon emission levels without slowing down the advancement of artificial intelligence.
Flux PoUW offers high-performance cloud computing and AI infrastructure to research teams, scientists, AI innovators, and others at competitive prices, enabling a future where artificial intelligence can reach its full potential for the good of humanity.
